PROCEDURES RELATED TO REQUIRED CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS

The Nebraska Real Estate License Act requires all applicants for original licensure as a real estate salesperson or broker to undergo a criminal background check utilizing fingerprints. This includes both resident and nonresident applicants.

In order to meet this requirement, two fingerprint cards are attached to these instructions and enclosed in the application packet.  If you are obtaining application information from our website, please call our office to obtain the required fingerprint cards.  Please follow these recommended procedures to submit BOTH completed cards to the Nebraska State Patrol.

Please do not fill out the fingerprint cards until you are at the fingerprinting location and assited by the figerprint technician. Please note that references to numbers other than your social security number are not applicable and may be disregarded.  All other information is required.  Applicants MUST utilize a law enforcement agency to have their prints captured onto the card so that they are readable.  Please bring some form of personal identification to your appointment. The Nebraska State Patrol requires identification issued by state or federal government.  Nebraska State Patrol sites will use a Livescan machine, which provides better images, to gather prints and will not charge a separate charge. While you may use some other law enforcement agencies may charge a separate fee for rolling the fingerprints and may not use a Livescan machine. Nebraska State Patrol office locations and hours available to roll fingerprints are as follows:

Before you leave the printing site check the two cards to be certain that each card has been signed by both the fingerprinter and you and that all information is filled out and readable.

Applicants bring a stamped envelope, large enough to accommodate the cards without being folded. The envelope should be addressed to:

Nebraska State Patrol
Attn: CID
3800 NW 12th Street, Suite A
Lincoln, NE 68521

The completed cards and a check or money order for $38.00, made payable to the Nebraska State Patrol should be placed in the envelope in front of the fingerprint technician.  If fingerprinted at the Lincoln location noted above, the mailing envelope will not be needed.

The Nebraska State Patrol will conduct a complete criminal background check on each applicant, including an FBI check, and submit the resulting report directly to the Commission office.   Your application will not be accepted until your criminal background report has been completed.  Four to six weeks after submitting your fingerprint cards to the Nebraska State Patrol, please call our office at (402) 471-2004 to see if the report has been completed, and once it is completed, submit you application promptly.  Criminal background reports expire after 90 days.
